How to build your cord profile

Building your profile

cord’s mission is to increase the number of people doing their best work and we make that happen by enabling the most simple transaction on earth - a conversation. In order for meaningful conversations to happen, companies and people need to have all information available before approaching each other. The transparency and level of detail allow both sides to confidently make that initial decision to send a message request and then to accept it.

The goal of building your profile on cord is to hit the ground running the moment it goes live on cord. This means building the experience section in a way that reflects your career and gives a good insight into what your previous roles entailed. It means ensuring that job titles and skills are stated clearly and can be easily filtered by companies who look for best people for their roles. It also means ensuring that expectations for future roles and interests are added to allow for the best opportunities to be presented to you when you look through companies and roles advertised on cord.

How do we support people building their own profiles to make sure that they meet the same standard of quality?

When building your profile, you can read our guide below to gain a better understanding of what each section is for and how to best fill it out.

When you finish and send your profile for review, we will check that there are no missing details and that the information matches the details provided during signup. If any accidental typo or formatting issue occurs, don’t fret! We’ll quickly update it for you.

💡
We will only make significant edits before setting your profile live when we feel that the quality standard which all profiles, both company and people, are held to, is not met.

*A significant edit is one related to the content of the profile. We can also catch formatting issues (spacing, bullet points, etc.) which we will solve as well.

What would we edit?

Transparency is a two way street. Below you will find a list of things which we would edit before setting a profile live.

❓ If in the Experience section, only one entry is added and in the attached CV/Linkedin, there are multiple relevant entries.

✏️ We will copy the relevant experience and add further entries.

❓ When a coding bootcamp is added in the Experience section.

✏️ We will move it to the Education section.

❓ When a project completed as part of a bootcamp is added in the Experience section.

✏️ We will move it to the Projects section.

❓ When the description of an experience(s) is formatted in a way that makes it fully illegible.

✏️ We will reformat the description to make it legible.

When would we decline a profile at this stage?

In rare instances, we have to reject a profile that previously passed our verification. This can happen in the following scenarios:

  1. If the profile is built with completely different details than the ones used for signup.
  1. If the profile is fully built in languages other than English.

Profile building 101

Below you will find a step by step guide to help you build a great cord profile. Broken down into sections corresponding to different parts of the profile, you will find useful explanations and tips.

Profile Information

Profile Picture

The top section of your profile is the first thing a company sees and it's how they form their first impression. It’s important to help them identify you, so include a picture of yourself. Let companies know who they’re speaking to.

Headline

Your headline is a short line or two that sums up who you are and what you're looking for. It's probably the most important part of your profile and is your chance to show some flair.

It can include anything: the project you're working on at the moment, a summary of your skills or a favourite hobby of yours. There are no rules - only you know you…

You can also use one of our personalised headlines auto-generated based on your current job title, company and interests. You can shuffle the different options in the Headline field.

Social Links

Links to a personal website, LinkedIn, GitHub etc. are proof of what your profile says and are a good way to demonstrate your capabilities - so include all the ones you have.

Skills & Requirements

This section is populated by information you gave during your homepage setup. It includes the job titles that most accurately reflect your current and desired roles, your core and other skills, seniority, work eligibility and preferred working locations.

Make sure to edit any of the answers you think can be more specific and accurate. Companies use cord’s filters to find people best matching their roles and having skills they most care about. Use this section to showcase your professional expertise.

Job titles

Hiring managers search for people on cord by job title - so put in the role you're looking for next. Job titles aren't always concrete and companies define them in different ways. If you want to be seen by more companies we encourage you to use the most popular job titles in your field.

Core skills

Your bread and butter. They're what you're using day in day out and could hit the ground running with tomorrow. Hiring managers use core skills in their searches to find relevant people, so only put down your strongest skills.

Other skills

A set of complementary skills that show how good you are at what you've got in primary. You might not use them every day but they show you're the whole package.

Ordering skills

Put your strongest skill first to show hiring managers what you're best at. To keep yourself more open to the opportunities on cord put trunk over branch skills first. ie. Javascript before React.

Job Preference

This section is partly populated by the information you gave during your homepage setup. It includes your expected salary, work preferences, skills and company types you are interested in. Use the section to clearly show what you are looking for in your next role.

Expected salary

As you can imagine, salary is one of the biggest factors in a your and company's decision. Hiring managers see this as what you're expecting from your next role, and if they can't afford it, they won't speak to you. Be upfront about what you're looking for next and you'll keep yourself open to more relevant opportunities.

Remote working

Straight-forward. If you've got a long commute or like working from home occasionally, say you'd like 1-2 days from home. If you love the office - 100% onsite. If you're not in the country - fully remote. Hiring managers see this as a requirement for your search rather than a nice to have - keep it simple and put in what's a 'must'. There are companies that fill all these specifications on cord and if you're right for the role, they'll speak to you.

Employment type

Currently, all of the positions on cord are permanent - you won't find any contract roles. So if you're looking for both, keep yourself on permanent to keep yourself open.

Company preference

Hundreds of companies use cord, covering different industries, funding stages & sizes. So whether you're into FinTech, Start-ups or are exclusively looking to work for a big company, if these factors are a requirement of your search, here's your chance to show it. Filling out this section will mean you're more likely to get messages relevant to your ideal position.

Experience, Education & Languages

The next few sections include your professional and educational experience. You can use them to go really in depth on what you’ve done so far and, by extension, how does it make you the perfect person for the next role. Companies do not have access to your CV file until you start a conversation (i.e. they accept your message request or you accept theirs). As such, make sure you put as much detail as possible here. You can list and expand on all your previous roles, put your education and languages you speak as well as add any awards you’ve received and/or publications you’ve contributed to.

Experience

A summary of all your professional endeavours. Don't just leave it at a job title - this is your chance to demonstrate the skills you've used, projects you've worked on, and the responsibilities you've held in your previous roles. Hiring managers can't see your CV yet, so make sure you're detailing everything you've been doing in each role.

Education

Whatever your education - Bootcamp, Apprenticeship, University, self-taught - it forms the foundations of your experience. Go into detail on what you learned, including modules, grades, societies, projects, responsibilities, etc.

Languages

You can list all languages you can speak and the level of proficiency. Companies often find it helpful to know if people know any additional languages, especially when they operate in specific geographical markets or work with clients in particular languages.

Incomplete Profiles

If you do not complete your profile within 24 hours of verification, do not worry! We will complete it for you using the information provided in the CV and/or Linkedin.
